They're not just adherents. They're the Sangha, and to call yourself a Buddhist you're supposed to value the Buddha, the Law, and the Sangha. Two out of three isn't it. Where's the compassion? I think Buddha got it right with the four noble thruths and the eight-fold path as a guide to life, but I can't call the monastic establishment a "jewel" when this goes on:

It's far better that my doctor be open about his/her beliefs so I can anticipate whether those beliefs affect his/her recommendations. Otherwise I'm in the dark.
