Does anyone know the %age of xians in the US?

Post by Deleted » Thu Jun 28, 2001 3:05 am

I was having a conversation with people on AIM just a minute ago... The conversation was pretty dumb for the most part - i.e:
Him: "you've never felt what I've felt when I talk to god."
Me: "How the hell do you know"
Him: "You can't possibly have felt what I have"
Me: "how do you know?!"
Him: "I just do"

But it was interesting nontheless, 'cuz it stoppes my boredom. But then the guy said something like, "then how come Christ makes 98% of the US population happy?"

98%?!?!?!?! Is it just me or that number unreasonbly high? Isn't the %age of atheist in the US something like 10%? So that bumps the Highest possible %age down to 90%, not including the vast amounts of other religions. And not including the people that lie on their census forms just to look good. So after that I laughed and left, I figured there was absolutly no hope with arguing with him.

Just to make sure I didn't make an ass out of myself (I made fun of him for that number). Does anyone know the actual %ages of religions in the US?

I think it's about 50% protestant and 25% Catholic. The rest is a variety of non Xian including 10% atheist/agnostic.

Those are round numbers.

From Encyclopaedia Brittanica 2001 Year Book (hard copy):

World:

Christian 33%
Non Christian 67%

USA

Christian 84.6%
Non Christian 15.4%

If anyone is interested, I will take the time to prepare and post this list in detail, by denomination and affiliation. Just let me know.

Norm.

Don't you just love xtians? Don't you just love how they can read minds? Isn't it interesting that they know so much more than you or I yet still believe in such irrational things as a big friend in the sky?
I hate being told what I think, feel, or am.

It's too high.

P.S. How's Vegeta doing these days?

Thinking that I can't feel waht he does isn't even the tip of the iceberg. He originally assumed that I was sad and ngry and christians. And then he said I like to belittle people that I feel are below me. That was before I even had a chance to talk!!

norm

Those look like good stats to me. However, didn't I hear a rumor about the people who have taken over control of the "Brittanica" operation? (I'll see if I can run the rumor to ground before making comment.)

9.5 billion? That seems astronomically large... I don't even think the population of the Earth is 10 Billion yet....
