xunzian, you can now feel less lonely; scarletpaint has a score similar to yours.

The users who are the closest to libertarians' conception of "statism" are:

VTboy:
Econ = -9.63
Soc = 7.23

Suigintou:
Econ = -9.25
Soc = 7.38

though they had posted their scores in earlier threads.

My invitation again: Moral Politics, Political Brew, Fire and Ice

From the numbers of those of you here who've taken those tests, I find these averages:

Moral Politics: 6 responses
Moral Order: -2.4 -- moderate interdependence
Moral Rules: 1.5 -- moderate nonconformance
Moderate Socialism

Political Brew: 4 responses
Fiscal: 32 -- moderate liberalism
Non-Fiscal: 15 -- strong liberalism

Fire and Ice: 3 responses
x: 1.39 -- fulfillment
y: -2.86 -- individualism
Idealism and Autonomy

My score surprised me. I did not expect to be that far left economically.

I'm glad to see that no one on the forums scored above 0 on the Authoritarian-Libertarian scale. :)

You jinxed it!

Economic Left/Right: -3.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.82

Someone had to break the barrier though, I suppose.

I looked back in IIDB's history and I found some Political-Compass threads going back all the way to June 2001. I also found a thread dedicated to the Political Brew's "Political Gauge" quiz; it was in August 2004.

Political Compass:
People: 698
Scores: 949
Excess: 36%

Moral Politics:
People: 25
Scores: 34
Excess: 36%

Political Brew:
People: 82
Scores: 130
Excess: 58%

Environics Fire and Ice:
People: 9
Scores: 18
Excess: 100%

Feel free to add to these numbers by taking those quizzes; I've mentioned some of them in the link in my previous post here.

Statistics: all scores vs. each person's latest score

Political Compass: Economic and Social
Mean -- -3.68 -3.67 -- -5.31 -5.13
Median -- -4.50 -4.50 -- -5.59 -5.49
Std Dev -- 4.17 4.06 -- 2.40 2.41
Avg Dev -- 3.28 3.17 -- 1.77 1.75
Skewness -- 0.84 0.89 -- 1.31 1.40
Kurtosis -- 0.25 0.41 -- 3.70 3.89

Moral Politics: Moral Order and Moral Rules
Mean -- -3.13 -3.22 -- 1.63 1.34
Median -- -3.00 -3.00 -- 3.00 2.00
Std Dev -- 2.19 2.29 -- 3.94 3.26
Avg Dev -- 1.75 1.90 -- 3.21 2.74
Skewness -- -0.34 -0.31 -- -0.50 -0.53
Kurtosis -- -0.69 -0.91 -- -0.37 -0.68

Political Brew: Fiscal and Non-Fiscal (0 = liberal, 100 = conservative)
Mean -- 35.21 33.63 -- 18.58 18.39
Median -- 29.00 28.00 -- 15.00 15.00
Std Dev -- 24.85 22.67 -- 13.17 12.42
Avg Dev -- 19.99 17.74 -- 10.15 9.31
Skewness -- 0.88 1.05 -- 1.24 1.34
Kurtosis -- -0.26 0.31 -- 1.27 2.08

Fire and Ice: competition/fulfillment and individualism/authoritarianism
Mean -- 1.01 0.89 -- -2.52 -2.36
Median -- 1.34 1.11 -- -2.54 -2.41
Std Dev -- 0.65 0.62 -- 1.06 0.93
Avg Dev -- 0.48 0.51 -- 0.89 0.74
Skewness -- -1.70 -1.10 -- 0.14 0.40
Kurtosis -- 2.12 0.29 -- -1.02 -0.69

What do the numbers mean?

In most cases, there is not much difference between the per-person and the total statistics; the kurtosis has the biggest departures, because of its fourth powers, followed by the skewness, with its third powers.

This means that the repeaters are not much different from the nonrepeaters.

I also conclude that there is a core population that is economic left / fiscal liberal and social libertarian / non-fiscal liberal, and that outside this population are a lot of people with relatively divergent opinions. This accounts for the positive PC and PB skewness values; positive is toward the coordinates' origin. It also accounts for the PC and PB medians being less than the means; medians are less affected by outliers. The outliers also make the kurtosis values positive, though the average deviations are approximately the fractions of the standard deviations that one expects from a normal distribution: sqrt(2/pi) or 0.798.

The Moral Politics results are odd in that while the Moral Rules scores are skewed in the expected direction, toward the origin, the Moral Order scores are skewed in the opposite direction.

I can't say much about the Fire & Ice results, because I don't have many of them to work with.

I've done a Principal Components Analysis on the big harvest of political-quiz scores I had posted on above, to find out how they correlate. This works by fitting an ellipsoid to the data points, and then finding the lengths and orientations of that ellipsoid's axes.

The longest axes are the directions of the largest amount of variation.

For each axis, my results are: length of axis followed by that length times the axis direction. Remember that each axis extends in opposite directions from the center point (the mean value); I will only give one direction, and you can find the opposite direction by multiplying by -1.

Political Compass (698):
length, economic, social
0.43 4.00 1.46
0.20 -0.70 1.91

Political Brew (82):
length, fiscal, non-fiscal
0.49 22.43 10.04
0.16 -3.27 7.32

PC + PB (28):
length, econ, soc, fisc, nonfisc
0.74 4.45 1.30 26.70 11.62
0.23 1.35 -1.46 -1.64 -5.07
0.16 0.87 0.95 -5.05 0.61
0.11 0.06 -0.51 -1.58 4.52

The strongest correlation fits a line that goes from
Economic left, fiscal liberal, social libertarian, non-fiscal liberal
to
Economic right, fiscal conservative, social moderate, non-fiscal moderate

All the other variation is only about 1/3 to 1/2 as much as that.

The Moral Politics test has two axes:
Moral Order, from egalitarianism to hierarchy
Moral Rules, from rewarding individual initiative to rewarding collective initiative

Moral Politics alone (25):
Length, Moral Order, Moral Rules
0.35 1.48 -3.16
0.19 -1.74 -0.82

PC + MP (19):
Length, Econ, Soc, Order, Rules
0.61 4.84 1.23 1.43 -3.20
0.27 0.61 -2.03 -1.59 -0.57
0.15 0.74 -0.38 0.37 1.14
0.11 0.28 0.65 -0.83 0.30

MP + PB (23):
Length, Order, Rules, Fisc, Nonfisc
0.63 -1.34 3.00 -24.07 -12.06
0.20 -1.76 -0.73 1.37 -2.40
0.17 -0.48 1.35 4.32 1.11
0.11 0.31 0.01 1.94 -4.64

PC + MP + PB (17):
Length, Econ, Soc, Order, Rules, Fisc, Nonfisc
0.86 4.69 1.22 1.43 -3.29 27.44 12.97
0.30 1.47 -1.77 -1.21 -0.77 -2.61 -5.26
0.19 0.81 0.43 1.22 -0.20 -5.37 -1.59
0.15 -0.47 0.34 -0.33 -1.23 -2.26 1.37
0.10 -0.42 -0.60 0.61 -0.30 1.21 -0.92
0.09 0.07 -0.39 0.06 0.11 -1.36 3.68

The strongest correlation fits a line that goes from
Economic left, collectivist, fiscal liberal, social libertarian, egalitarian, non-fiscal liberal
to
Economic right, individualist, fiscal conservative, social moderate, mildly hierarchical, non-fiscal moderate

My page Political Compass scores contains density plots and an archive of the data files I've put together.

Hi folks,

Just so you know, I've decided not to continue making the graphs here. I'll be doing this at a different forum. If someone would like to take over and continue the process, just let me know and I can email my OpenOffice Calc file to you.

I'll leave it up to the mods if they wish to unsticky this thread.
