Eastern Practices: Do you mean Yoga? Surely it is not a religion. Philippe would be better able to inform you if it is a philosophy.
I would say that what is called classically Yoga is a darshana, but with we take a larger meaning, there are several yogic darshanas. Darshana means point of view, it is a point of view on reality generally in an attempt to transcend the common human condition and reduce duhkha, suffering. Yoga means union, it is used for both the goal and the method. Union of body, breath and mind ; realization of the union of the inner self with the supreme self ; union of dualities leading to a non-dual state aso... viyoga means detachement, detachement from the manifested world, the alienating psychological bounds... The Indian tradition recognizes three valid ways to knowledge : tradition, reason, experience. Yoga emphasizes on experience, theory comes after.
Personally, I think that all these darshanas are more or less false, they are systems made up by the human mind to describe things that go beyond the intellectual understanding. It is helpful like more or less accurate maps of some mysterious world.
The trouble with Eastern practices (as they don't like to be called religion or philosophy) in general is that they seem unable or unwilling to subject themselves to scrutiny.
You're in CA. Do you by "Eastern practices" refer to European religions, or to what's normally known as the Eastern Churches?
I get the feeling, though, that you address Asian views. Wouldn't it in that case be more appropriate from your starting point to speak of Western "practices"?
Otherwise, it looks as geographicaly confused as when USAians refer to us Scandinavians as "Caucasians", when in fact we're at least 20,000 kms away from the Caucasus.
[Imagine a set of appropriate smileys.]

The Far East isn't very far from those living there...
