THIS IS NOW OUTDATED - see the later posts in this thread

How to construct links to Amazon

You need to know the ISBN number, and plug it into this format:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... ecularweb/

and/or

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... tInfidels/

(replacing the xxxxxxxxx with the 9-digit ISBN or other product identification).

If the book is in the secweb bookstore, it is better to link to that page directly.

{Notice that I unchecked the box that says "Automatically parse URLs" so you can read this.}

You can find the ISBN number in any Amazon link, or under the Product Details section. You will find lots of other numbers in any Amazon link, including your own account numbers if you have an Amazon account and the cookies for it on your computer. I usually snip these out, although they don't hurt anything.

The above instructions work for Amazon.com based in the US. For Amazon UK, Bill has posted the following:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... ularweb09/

note - /thesecularweb09 replaces /thesecularweb

Take the UK link, above, and replace the 10 x's after the ASIN/ with the particular 10-digit number for the particular product you wish to purchase and then use that link to find the UK version of the product and price. So long as the next thing you do after accessing that link is to click on the "Buy" button, II gets the full commission amount.

UPDATE: Amazon links should be constructed using the Amazon tag [ amazon= ] with the 10 digit isbn number. This will automatically add the new frdb tag freeratidiscb-20 to the Amazon link, which will generate revenue to support this board whenever anyone uses that link to buy from Amazon.

E.g.:

[ amazon=0060097957 ]Doubt: A History[ /amazon ] without the spaces generates this url:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... tidiscb-20

It is much better to use the amazon tag: All of the old amazon tags were automatically converted to freeratidiscb-20, but the hardcoded links have not been.

All Amazon links will be converted to frdb format - links that are copied sometimes have revenue links to another Amazon associate.

Please also note that the Amazon reader is only available to those who have purchased a book from Amazon, so deep links into the reader may not work for everyone.

Deep links into google books can sometimes become unreadable. It is best to include the book name and page number.

PS: Sorry Toto, the amazon tag doesn't seem to work properly. I probably did something wrong
I also have never been able to infidelise anything - is this something that can only be done if you are logged in as frdb?

It looks to me as if Amazon knows who I am and won't let me be anyone else!

Just copy the 10 digit ISBN number. Click on the Amazon button, or manually type in "", then the title of the book, then [ /amazon ] without the spaces.

If you can't figure it out, don't worry.

You should get two links - one to Amazon US and another one to Amazon UK.
