We need it. Have we not become 'civilized'?
I do not support the idea of "becoming civilized" because those who claim to be civilized are often far worse then the people they call barbarians.
As for knowledge itself I support a decentralized, non-hierarchical distribution of knowledge that everybody has access to and can useable ever they want. Take and use what is needed to put it simply.

I think a lot of you here are missing the point
entirely.
The question is not deciding whether Portugal should conquer and colonize eastern South America. They already did that 500+ years ago.
Brazilian civilization is already at their doors, in fact its all around them. Contact with Western Civ is not in question. The question is HOW.
And that is what both
Abaddon and
Aupmanyav have not understood (both the situation and what I have said). These people can either navigate through modern Brazil ignorant or with full knowledge of things that will enable and empower them: the Portuguese language, spoken and written; Brazilian law and beaurocratic procedures; "cultural geral" (common knowledge of the kind you get at school). These people need something like
Paulo Freire's empowering education. Help them swim, not watch them sink!
Brazilian civilization is not their civilization.
It is not, nor should it ever be except they choose it themselves.
If a few Yanomami choose to get an education in the other culture to help their people battle for their rights as a relatively independent people and to sustain their own culture for as long as they can, then that's great.

aupmanyav, FRDB isn't going though. You can sign up at the new "FRDB"
here and keep recognition of your 8 years contribution. Might as well, even if your interest in FRDB has flagged (as mine has). That way you're still "you" IF you do choose to stop by and say something.
