I don't understand why this thread required any moderation at all, much less why it was closed. For such a sensitive topic I thought the vast majority of the participants were pretty cool about it. The most egregious offense I saw was one person saying, "you sound like a Christian" and the other person saying, "don't you go callin' me a Christian".
Did a bunch get edited out? Is there some other history or reference point that I'm not privy to? Is having a "heated debate" now cause for moderator intervention here? Is every thread where people disagree vehemently going to be closed until people "calm down"? Has there been a new policy of heavily enforced civility introduced that I'm unaware of?
*vm takes a deep breath*
Okay, I'm fine, I'm fine. Sorry. I just. I just don't get it. I thought that was an interesting thread and a couple of the participants are fairly new members. I just hate to see them get the message that they'll be gagged for raising their voice. Unless of course that's just the way it is now.

Well, the moderators feel that my "it looks like trouble is brewing and irons need to be struck while hot" trigger finger was overly itchy, and if there was a hell my good intentions were probably paving a road to it.
So carry on, and sorry for the interruption. No text was deleted - you'd see a "last edited by . . ." addition at the bottom of a post that had been edited.
chastened,
Michael

Thanks Michael. I appreciate you reopening the discussion.
I'm still confused about what happened, though. I get that you were a little quick on the draw, but I'm still not entirely sure what foe you were aiming at. I don't see why someone didn't just tell three4jump, in that thread, that he/she should be more careful to avoid insulting implications in his/her comments. I would have done it myself if I had gotten there a few minutes earlier. Is there significant reason to believe that wouldn't have defused the situation? (I'm not being rhetorical, either, I don't know anything about the members in question).
Aquavita, I still don't really understand what precisely prompted you to intervene in that thread when you did. At the time you posted, the only "heated exchange" (as far as I can tell) was literally three4jump saying, "You sound like Christians", and godfry n. glad responding with, "Please show me where I've demonstrated my ignorance ... Please explain your offensive remarks."
I've seen numerous examples here of much more volatile exchanges taking place before there was any comment from the moderators at all. I honestly don't understand why you felt it was necessary to step in and tell everyone to "play nice" and that moderators would be "keeping an eye on the thread" at that particular juncture.
And honestly, no offense intended, but "play nice" sounds incredibly condescending to me, and "Myself and my fellow mods will keep an eye on this thread" sounds a bit paternal as well. I think mature, responsible adults are capable of having heated debates that may or may not include raised voices and ruffled feathers, without having to be scolded like schoolchildren. And as IIDB is a moderated forum, it should go without saying that the moderators are paying attention to the discussions.
I don't mean to sound unappreciative of the very difficult job you or the other moderators and administrators here have, it just seems to me that you're only making things more difficult on yourself by sometimes weighing in unnecessarily on discussions that are, for the most part, going along well enough.

Well, perhaps I should have been more clear that I wasn't really posting a warning to anyone in particular...just a reminder to keep the thread level-headed and within forum guidelines. I had no intention of making an official warning or threat to close the thread. And when asked by Godfrey if it was ok to continue on, I said of course it was, just keeping the rules in mind.
Does that help clarify it a bit? Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
